The Panasonic Lumix G3 is a new 15.8 megapixel cameral that blurs the line between the mini-DSLR styled G2 and the GF2 which is designed along more compact camera principles. It's small and neat like the GF2, but has a built-in EVF and a flip-out touch-sensitive LCD screen like the G2.

Is the Panasonic G3 the Micro Four Thirds camera that enthusiasts have been hoping for? Angela Nicholson takes a look...

  • it actually has a 16.6MP sensor, 15.8MP effective and how can the G2 now be aimed more toward entry level when ease of use clearly seems to be the main feature of this new model especially as Panasonic have dropped some of the higher spec features from the G2 - focus mode selector, viewfinder sensor, shutter preview, no dedicated AE/AF lock, no external mic socket, etc - to make this less intimidating.

  • @altern8ive The effective pixel count is the most meaningful figure for photographers. Interestingly, Panasonic released a firmware upgrade yesterday which boosts the G3’s effective pixel count to 16.

Focus mode is selected via the Quick Menu on the G3 and the default setting for the Fn1 button is AE/AF lock.

According to Panasonic the G2 will continue and the G3 sits above it because of the G3’s more advanced sensor, processing engine, AF system, video capability.

  • @JogBird The G3 has a Four Thirds type sensor that measures 17.3x13mm. This is smaller than the average APS-C format camera sensor (around 23.6x15.7mm), but considerably larger than the sensor in a point and shoot compact camera (a 1/1.8in sensor for example, is around 7.2x5.3mm).

  • Hating the articulating touch screen. Thats the reason why i didn't get the GF2 and went for the LX5

  • @white8ass8kika Unlike the GF2, the G3 has a mode dial and a couple of extra buttons on its back. These and the articulated screen (the GF2's screen is fixed) significantly improve the handling of the G3 over the GF2. The Touch Shutter system that triggers the G3 to focus and fire the shutter is especially useful.

  • How does the G2 become a entrylevel model? In Panasonic its like the newer models lose the enthusiast features of the old. Look at the GF line, GF3=rebranded compact camera. Baisically Panasonic's past m4/3 cameras were more popular with the pros because of the complex features. Panasonic just make the cameras smaller, add crap touchscreens, add gimmick features to replace the pro ones in the old cameras. In MY opinion Panasonic produce piece of crap now (Except the GX1) compared to Olympus!

  • dmc g3... and g3... are they the same? of different.. and do they both still have the touch screen features? thanx

  • can i put a videolight on the camera ?

  • i love your reviews. you've covered all the questions on my mind.

  • Awesome

  • i would mutch rather have the g2

  • @JogBird The largest compact camera sensors (1/1.6") are only 22% of the size of the m43 sensor (48mm vs. 225mm), so you could fit over 4 1/2 of them on the G3's sensor. Most compacts, though, even high-end enthusiast ones, use a 1/1.7" sensor, which is less than 20% the size (you could fit 5 of them), or smaller.

For reference, you can only fit 1.4-1.6 m43 sensors on an APS-C sensor (depending on if it's Canon's or everyone else), and you can fit 2.3-2.6 APS-C sensors on a FF sensor.

  • @white8ass8kika I'm laughing at the irony of "your an idiot."

  • @white8ass8kika I have a Canon G12 and a Lumix GF1. The G12 cannot keep up with the GF1, which is an older generation MFT camera. The G3 outperforms it by a large margin. As for MFT lenses, many are far from poor quality and are smaller than similar quality DSLR lenses. So, I can fit the camera and four lenses in a small LowePro bag, in which I couldn't fit a DSLR with even three of the equivalent lenses. That's the point: similar performance, smaller system.

  • she is ugly
