2. "Registrerat partnerskap" or "registered parnership" in English is the gay alternative to "äktenskap". It has much the same legal effects as "äktenskap"
3. In Sweden, there is a debate whether or not to create a gender neutral law on marriage. In such a law, it wouldn't matter if you were gay or straight, your union would be called "äktenskap".
Those opposing (mostly christian rights) believe the word "äktenskap" should be resereved for union btw man and woman for historical reasons.

This might sound as mere technicalities, but I believe it is important to make some things clear from a legal point of view

1. The institution "marriage" i.e. a commitment between man and woman (traditionally) that has legal effects, mostly concerning ownership rights, is translated into "äktenskap" in Swedish. Only MAN and WOMAN are allowed to join in an "äktenskap" in Sweden

21% of the pop is under 17 and 17.5 % over 65. i guess that not all americans between the age of 18 and 64 are married.
In sweden i would guess that a average age of marriage is about 25-30 (a guess)
so there is nothing remarkeble about swedens 60% not married population.
