A splendid day that was all the more memorable for the presence of so many young people paying their respects to the servicemen and women and the Dover residents and workers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The words of the Kohima Memorial were particularly apt. A National War Memorial on Western Heights would be a fitting tribute to the central role played by Dover and East Kent in the front line of the defence of Britain in the face of a terrible threat to our freedom and way of life.
