5. Seeing the Invisible: No longer do telescopes just collect visible light. Scattered around the globe are astronomical facilities that 'see' the Universe at radio, (sub-)millimetre and infrared wavelengths. There are even 'telescopes' to study gamma rays, high-energy particles and gravitational waves, as well as neutrino observatories that need to be buried underground. Without this multispectral approach, the study of the Universe would be severely incomplete.

The "Eyes On The Skies" movie explores the many facets of the telescope - the historical development, the scientific importance, the technological breakthroughs, and also the people behind this ground-breaking invention, their triumphs and failures. It is presented by Dr. J, aka Dr. Joe Liske, a professional astronomer from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and host of the Hubblecast video podcast.

"Eyes On The Skies" is an official movie for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 and the International Astronomical Union, produced by ESA/Hubble (the same team as behind the widely distributed movie "Hubble - 15 Years of Discovery").

  • Can't wait for 2014.

Not only will I be able to mock 2012ers, I'll be able to see more of the universe

    Hurray

  • Ffreethinker:I can't tell you how much I appreciate you uploading these beautiful awesome clips. Watching them in HD is a shear delight. And listening to the contend makes me feel wonderful. What a great thing to be able to share the discoveries of scientists, to hear and learn about the tools they are using. After watching clips like these one thing comes to mind: It's great to be alive!

Apart from of cause finding a future home.

Earth wont always stick around you know.

  • @personalsinr

Well either that or we could commandeer some of the national defense-budget.

  • EXCELLENT.

  • Spaceship One!!! That is our better launch technique! Google it!!!

  • Yes but microbolometers are less sensitive than cooled ones. They are good for mass market and purposes like surveillance. For measuring the heat of an object light years away you would still probably go for a cooled one.

  • Alright, sounds good. YOU build the ladder.

  • ...

    several hundred revolutions per second.

    holy.. crap..

  • we do not have the technology to bring materials like that to the moon efficiently. It took a LOT of fuel for one round trip. To actually build an array up there would take tremendous amounts of money and time. We need to develop better launch techniques before any of that can happen.

  • great post, loved it

  • So

If the conspiracy theorists are wrong, and man has been on the moon

When are we gonna see some of the arrays gracing the face of the moon

I mean, with no atmosphere to distort these waves, you would hear more, yes?

    Just like the hubble telescope?
