The Cost of Hope

Produced during a month in southern Thailand, "The Cost of Hope," tells the story of one immigrant family from Myanmar as they struggle to pay a devastating hospital bill.

The story focuses on Ngern, a father of two who made the dangerous passage to Thailand more than a decade ago, hoping to create a better life for his family and escape Myanmar's crushing military government.

After Ngern's son suffers from a crushing accident, however, the hospital bill threatens to ruin everything Ngern has built for his family.

For the thousands of illegal immigrants living in semi-secrecy in Thailand, hardships like Ngern's are a daily reality, made easier only by the fact that life in Myanmar could be far more challenging.
