@Rawwwwwwwwrrrrrrrr A pirate is anyone who commits an act of piracy. Pirates were around loooong before the Golden Age of Sail, and the Vikings are arguably one of the most proficient, and most prolific groups of pirates in history!

Given the theme of the CD, the meaning of this song should be obvious; half the Vikings around Miklagard were pirates, and the other half were pirates who were being paid off by the Emperor to join the Varangian Guard, or otherwise serve the Byzantine Empire.
It's not a dig at Alestorm.
