Alexander Scriabin (1872-1915) piano sonata no.3 opus 23
III. Andante
IV. Finale: Presto con fuoco
piano: Vladimir Horowitz (1903-1989)
Rec. New York 1956

The third sonata was composed in 1897 when Scriabin was 25 years old. It is the last of Scriabin's two sonatas (no. 1 & no. 3) in a traditional four movement form.

Scriabin subtitled the sonata "Etats d'Âme" ("Soul-States"). About the third movement he wrote: "The Soul floats on a tender and melancholy sea of feeling..." And about the Finale: "Now the elements unleash themselves. The Soul struggles within their vortex of fury... When all is within its grasp, it sinks, broken, falling into a new abyss of nothingness."

  • @f1f1s thanks for your comment! Wow - how is it that I've played the 2/5ths of those sonatas and yet have never heard of the Reubke—Bb moll ? Thank you for introducing me! I love youtube. It's amazing that sometimes the comments are so inane, then you run across stuff like this. Crazy!

  • 06:20-06:52 fragment has been haunting me for more than a month! Every time I open a drawer in the kitchen or turn to the sink, Scriabin hits! And his godlike passages make me feverish. Every day the same.

    Let's estimate a list of 10 best piano sonatas. Reubke—Bb moll, Liszt—H moll, Scriabin—No.3, Rachmaninov—No.2, Alkan—Quatre ages, Chopin—No.2, Beethoven—Pathetique, Grieg—E moll, Medtner—Romantica, Schumann—No.1. Wait, already 10?

Scriabin was right when he claimed to be the God! Truly, he is!

  • Absolutely! The opening of the 3th Movement is one of the most beautiful piano music ever written... Just magic!

  • Thank you ever so much for uploading!!

  • It really is states of the soul.

  • This playing and interpretation of this wonderful music is fabulous in every way. Horowitz was so sensitive and brought out the music. He himself was going through a terrible time when he recorded this during his 12 years away from the concert platform. The man was a true genius. He brings me to another world whenever I listen to him. He was totally unique and magical.

  • awesome!
