running out of resources is just one dimension of a multidimensional predicament. consummer society is not only depleting nature's exhuberant abundance at a rate faster than the period that saw the extinction of the dinosaurs, it is also creating an increasingly toxic environment that will eventually be unable to sustain any kind of life, and, just as importantly, it is rapidly depleting the vast diversity of ways that the human condition is lived out. consumer culture is eroding our humanity.
i'm all for reducing consumption, but the idea that we're just going to run out of resources is false. economic history shows that human ingenuity is hard to predict. we will find new resources and new ways to use old ones.
