Stop all of those speculating about Rei wanting to be Shinji's mother. Yes, Rei was created from the rests of Yui but that's it. Rei is Rei, Yui is Yui.

Rei and Shinji's feeling for each other are real, the manga gives more of an insight. Kind of heartbreaking but NGE characters aren't supposed to have a happy ending.

I could handle this scene in the anime. It takes a lot for Evangelion to make me cry. However, the manga takes this whole scene right up to eleven...it even gives you hope that she might just make it before she dies...only two times has Evangelion nearly made me cry, and that's with Kaji's backstory and Rei's death. Anno, Sadamoto, you magnificent BASTARDS.
