@renimagery i'm going to assume that youve listened to those artists extensively to make such a judgment. im a HUGE jay-z fan and ive just found out about joanna newsom but i dont see why both cant be talented. pop fans think alternative music is weird and alternative fans think pop/hip hop is soulless. instead of coexisting, each side has to try and tear the other apart. who cares, just listen to what you want, no one is forcing jay-z or katy perry on you so why attack them preemptively?

Some of you are right about her goods looks but you are entirely wrong about that being the only quality she has. I heard her music before I ever knew what she looked like and I'm sure there are plenty of people who discovered her exactly the way I had. She has had a great musical career and I hope it continues.

@dunderheadflynn True, and what is worse is that if that same bald geezer sang with an ultra stupid faked up accent he would be fucking crucified. She somehow gets away with it because she's hot. THAT marketability is what Drag City banks on. Not her talent -- which in my opinion is in question in anyway...

I appreciate artists who keep it real, and channel honesty and integrity. I'm not getting that from Newsom at all - but I capitulate she clearly dedicated time and effort.

@vantagestudios shes a good looking bird, who plays harp and has a different voice. we've gone from her voice to her marketing angles. marketing angles?? she writes popular music. shes signed to drag city records. an interesting label with a pretty big, well established roster. its natural this stuff will be reviewed and accessed by 100s of 1000s of people. lets face it, some bald lad, just as talented, with a dodgy comb-over, ain't gonna be as popular. sad, but true. the end.

If it sounds good, it sounds good. if she spent years perfecting her style of singing so that it sounds intentionally like a crazy woman from Warsaw(not really getting the eastern european thing by the way) circa 1679 and claims its natural, then so be it. fair dues to dedicating so much time and effort to her craft if that is the case

@vantagestudios I think you have all the right in the world to say: "that is not my cup of coffee, its is over-cultivated for my taste". I was just a little upset, that you made apodictic verdicts about things, that are just methods. There is nothing more "unnatural" as classical opera, so what about Mozart or Wagner? Escapism? Artificial crazyness to burst marketing? Just methods to do something like "Don Giovanni".

@zettberlin Not necessarily. I appreciate what comes naturally, especially if it is expressed in an artistic manner. Joanna Newsom has over-cultivated her vocal expression (and pretty much her whole professional / artistic demeanor) to boost her marketing potential. THAT'S what I dislike.

If you're going to be a charlatan just so you can stand out in a crowd at least admit it. No one has an accent like that naturally unless they have a hair lip or grew up in Eastern Europe.

@vantagestudios you fuckin' toolbox. so you're saying not to use your voice like another instrument. just sing 'normally' and refrain from jumping out of the safe restrictions of what your voice is capable of? "lets not go crazy people. sing like normal people do". if you don't like the song and think her singing is shit, then fine. saying it is fake is a load of bullshit. there's nothing fake about manipulating your voice to give a song a certain sound or feel

Art is artificial, there is no such thing as being "authentic". To be authentic is just another way to be artificial.
