Daniel NEVER looked or spoke to Mirah the way he did to Gwendolen - he did seem like he was in love with Gwen in the miniseries. And she with him, although they never said it. His proposal, kiss and marriage to Mirah seemed very perfunctory compared to his scenes with Gwen. He didn't seem to have anything other than platonic feelings for Mirah for the most part. We identify and follow Gwen and Daniel because they are main characters and have the chemistry.

in this adaptation, the screenwriter made it seem like Daniel loves Gwendolen, and then decided to marry Mirah instead because of his Jewish background and promise to Mordecai.
