Feast of the Black Nazarene 2008 Quiapo Manila

January 9, 2008 - The largest procession in the country takes place on January the 9th and on Good Friday through the streets of Quiapo, a small part of metro Manila.

Every year thousands of pilgrims from all over the country come to Manila to be part of the procession of the Black Nazarene. All participants in the procession hope that they will have the opportunity to touch the wooden statue. They hope that this will protect them from harm and ensure health in the future. Indeed, it is said that sometimes persons were healed of diseases after touching the statue! Some of them follow the statue during the procession because they believe it is an atonement of their sins or hope for some miracle.

The procession dates from the 17th century. Thousands of men parade through the streets with the life-sized, black wooden statue of Jesus (of Nazarene). Only men, because during the feast of the Black Nazarene thousands of barefoot men join the annual procession. Walking barefoot during the procession is seen as a sign of humility.

During this procession the men yell "Viva Señor".
Everybody who is in the neighborhood tries to touch the statue. People believe that a miracle can happen after touching it.

@luzier13x I understand that Britney may have the numbers. The logic here is that truth has attraction to people and it can be shown in numbers as quantitative proof. It is incomprehensible to think of a God without people worshiping Him. When God showed Abraham the stars outside His tent, He intended to show proof to Abraham that innumerable progeny would worship God through this old man from Ur. My argument here is that the goal of our action is what is more important; the end justifies.

@wellasang i strongly disagree with you about the numbers as a basis there. even britney spears has millions of followers and growing. but i dont think God has something to do with it. my point is, are we sure that God wanted this? the devotions of most people there are no doubt for God. but, is this really the way? i mean there are certain incidents in the bible were good intentions lead to destruction because of wrong procedure. God even told us not to worship graven images.

@luzier13x Your post is understandable. We cannot understand why such throng happens every year. It is this "craziness" which prompts us to thinking why. If only we have the possibility to know the hearts of these people can we truly appreciate the gravity of their devotion. After all, if this were the work of the devil, this would have died a long time ago. But, each year the number of those who flock to the black Nazarene is pulling up. We can certainly conclude that this has a divine force.

@knightslucky jesus christ was a man back then. there is a posibility that he could marry someone. if u read the bible, u will know that christ life at age 13- 22 i think, wasnt told in th bible. Im a devoted christian myself. and i dont see anything wrong with christ having a wife because he became a human being when he was on earth. anyway, its only a movie. if christ has or has no wife, he's still my savior.
