Make and then Model Your Own Bikini! (Butlins Holiday Camp 1961)

Make and model your own bikini, this competition is part of the entertainment on a Butlins holiday camp in Clacton, Essex, England (1961). It is taken from the original British Pathe reel "Bikini Competition".

The girls and their boyfriend have to make the best bikini they can out of a bag of materials whilst the crowd of other holidaygoers spectates. Then the girls disappear and must try on their bikinis before parading before the crowd and judges!

The man in the blue stripey shirt is called Roger Simmons (@prehistory42). He left a note on our Facebook page, The British Pathe Film Archive, explaining that none of the participants knew each other and a seamstress made the bikinis off camera!

it was poetic licence in the commentary, none of us had ever met before.

it says that the boys that helped the girls are their "boyfirend" 0:13 . how can you not meet her again after this?

.... Sad to say, I never met her again, she is probably a grandparent today like me.

As a child my family and I went to Butlins Clacton many times from the late 1960's to 1981, the memories will always stay with me, the way it looked, the red coats that always gave you a friendly wellcome and kept that interest of your time while you were there for your holiday with them, I don't think it has the same feel, with the new Butlins, its too flash now and dear, and the red coats don't seem to have that warmth like the old days.sad to think Clacton is no longer with us.
