The story tells that in 1918 the imperial examination system is abolished. Kong Yiji, a talent who read for all his life has no way to become outstanding through exam. He always thought himself was nobleman full of education but the society had totally changed at that time. It was a society of cold,influence and pretense.Everyoen was laughing at Kong Yiji's bookish concept and mock at him.He felt depressed with no self-esteem.Finally died in misery.

衣破狗来咬 I'm dressed in rags even the dogs bite on me
路绝逢断桥 Ahead with no way to go
人间白眼多 I'm fed up with disdainful looks and cold shoulders
世上真情少 Where is the true friendness?
短衣短惹人笑 People laughing at my short coat
长衫长更潦倒 and tease at my long gown
金蝉脱壳离旧枝 Cicadas unshell themselves from old branches
何不脱下长衫挂林梢 Why not take off the long gown and hang it on the branch?

千年浩气在 Thousands of years of noble spirit
百代书香飘 and scholar dignity
只有长衫在身留风骚 only can be implied by the long gown
我乃孔门读书人 I'm reading Confucius for all my life
不着长衫何以见舜尧 How can I live up to my ancestors with the gown off
