Chivichana Festival in La Habana, Cuba.
Over 200 persons gathered on Saturday, June 27 at the Paseo de Cojimar in La Habana, Cuba to witness the first ever Chivichana Festival. Over 30 Chivichana riders from different localities came together for this peculiar event, including kids, college students and sport enthusiasts from different parts of the city.
The Chivichana is a popular home-made Cuban street kart used mostly by children for entertainment purposes (instead of bicycles). The kart consists of four to five pieces of wood, metal bearings (as wheels) and, in some cases, a piece of rope (for steering). In some parts of Cuba the Chivichana is also used by adults for transportation purposes.
The Festival, that was developed by the National Institute of Sports of Cuba along with Red Bull, consisted of a speed and resistance competition in two different age groups: under 15 and 16 and over. Contestants in the speed category rode a 200 meter circuit of steps and drops, while participants in the resistance category had to ride the circuit uphill, creating incredibly funny moments.
