San Mateo County issued themselves a Coastal Development Permit Exemption one month after this video was published. The Coastal Development Permit Exemption checkbox for grading was marked N/A. The County failed to discuss the project at any publicly noticed meetings.
The Coastal Development Permit Exemption (CDX) checkbox for grading is marked N/A.
Video date: Jun 29, 2011 / CDX date: July 29, 2011
- Why was the grading check box marked Not Applicable for grading?
- Why is the CDX dated one month after the Quarry Park playground grading/excavation work was completed?
- Why is the description of the work being performed in the CDX inconsistent with the actual work being preformed?
If you think the choice is between DG and asphalt you are drinking the San Mateo County Kool-Aid.

The San Mateo Board of Supervisors are aware that county staff neglected to notify the public about the project, declined to discuss the project at any publicly noticed meetings, ran over budget, did an end-run around the planning department, designed the playground on a cocktail napkin, refused to consider ADA compliant environmentally friendly alternatives to black-toping the park with 60 tons of asphalt and overlooked concerns about injuries that occur when kids fall on asphalt.

Each year, more than 200,000 kids are treated in hospital ERs for playground-related injuries. A proper playground surface is one of the most important factors in reducing injuries — and the severity of injuries — that occur when kids fall. Concrete, asphalt, and blacktop are unsafe and unacceptable.

I recognize the significant contribution the County has made to improve Quarry Park with new play equipment however paving Quarry Park with 60 tons of asphalt is nothing to celebrate.
