Yes, the video hasn't been reprinted since when it was released in the eighties. I have only seen a battered VHS of this that was just about to die. A reprint on DVD would be great for this movie.

@Motoss a slight criticism the story kinda drags it doesn't seem to have any form of action or comic relief for anime

@malevolenceXXXensues Consider that this movie was made in the early 1980s (before anime was popularized in the west and even before it was so successful in Japan), and that it is based on a culturally significant, 1000 year old story.

@malevolenceXXXensues If you want to see something more modern, try the newest anime based on the Genji, Genji Monogatari Sennenki. It's an 11 episode anime series from 2009 that you may like better (also it has more content obviously).

It would be nice adding the 90% of the story that has been left out. A person watching this and not knowing anything about the Genji would still know nothing. It is a fate the Genji should not suffer.

I may not understand your comment, but if I do, allow me to point a few things out.

This story took place 1,000 years ago, in Heian Japan. Genji was most certainly not a "slut" according to that era's societal norms, and was actually very well-mannered. While there are some instances of Karmic Repercussions in the story, they are not completely due to disloyalty to his wife. Genji's marriage to his wife was arranged--He still had many affairs before and after....as did everyone.

if i went to the cinema to watch this in 87, i d come out of it depressed as hell.

not to mention i lost the basic plot at part 3...but its ok, it was an experience

This was a very interesting interpretation, but sadly one that only opens to a person that already knows Genji Monogatari well. It is also dissapointing in lacking the original lushness of the novel, going for a rather minimalistic presentation. It excells in the examination of character psychology that the original had, allthough in a much more modern way.
