  • CBS had purchased Terrytoons from Paul Terry in the Fall of 1955, which made the Terrytoons library available for the network to exploit.

"Mighty Mouse" cartoons began appearing on the network's Saturday-morning schedule in late 1955; this series marked the TV debut of Heckle and Jeckle.

In addition, the TV set in Dick VanDyke's studio appears to be a CBS-Columbia model (yes, for a time in the 1950's, after buying Hytron Electronics, CBS actually made TV sets!)

  • @143AC Waaaaaa-hoo! I saw The Surprise Show.

  • @fromthesidelines It's quite possible. Considering when and how out of sequence things were filmed, losing track fifty years later would not be astonishing.

  • According to Dick's recollections in his new autobiography, "My Lucky Life: In and Out of Show Business", he claims this was a "Saturday-morning" show. Of course, it aired on Wednesday nights; I'm certain he barely remembers this series at all. Is it possible that someone like Van Dyke could forget working on 13 weeks of this series, while remembering his previous stint on CBS' "MORNING SHOW"?

  • Jim tyler is my god!

  • The concept of a live on camera host/performer talking

with cartoon like characters on a tv set. That type of format was revived in the mid 1960's

    on WPIX TV Ch.11 NYC's "Surprise Show"with Mr.Hank

Stohl and The Morey Bunin Aniforms.

  • This was at the time when "Mighty Mouse Playhouse" was also on Saturday mornings and it was done by the same studio which was Terrytoons.

  • wow this is classic early television

    lol

  • I never knew this information posted by fromthesidelines. No wonder I cannot recall this show what with Disneyland being it's competition!! This is quite an interesting clip from the archives!

  • This was CBS' attempt to compete with ABC's "DISNEYLAND" on Wednesday nights in the summer of 1956. Van Dyke was under contract to CBS at the time, and part of his duties was hosting this show- which, incidentally, NEVER had sponsors (it was "sustained", with promos and PSA's delivered by Dick himself inbetween "Terrytoons").
