Bernard King opened up the second half of the season with the first of what would be back to back 50 point games. This started off a scoring tear that Bernard King would continue through the playoffs and until his injury the following season. The style of the game was run and gun, which is usually how the Spurs liked to play, but the Knicks who were the polar opposite stylistically beat the Spurs at their own game. Bernard King had 31 of his 50 in the first half and George Gervin was also hot from the start with 25 of his 41 in the first half. It was a close game, but King played better than Gervin as the Ice Man had only 2 points in the 4th quarter and those came at the start of the quarter.

Bernard King- 50 points, 20/30 FG, 10/13 FT
Bill Cartwright- 21 points, 9/16 FG, 3//6 FT
Truck Robinson- 8 points, 15 rebounds, 3/11 FG, 2/3 FT
Darrell Walker- 9 points, 15 assists, 3/8 FG, 3/4 FT

George Gervin- 41 points, 19/31 FG, 3/6 FT
Artis Gilmore- 12 points, 14 rebounds, 4/7 FG, 4/4 FT
John Lucas- 7 points, 16 assists, 2/6 FG, 1/3 3P, 2/2 FT

  • It's amazing how much the Spurs tail-dived from 1982-83 to this '84 season..other than a new coach and a few different players here and there, I don't see how they went from being a 53-win team in the Western Conference Finals to being 4 games under .500 coming into this contest..this was the beginning of the end for the Iceman-Gilmore San Antonio team..

  • @LuigiLaker Well, I guess Artis Gilmore missing more gameshad a big impact, but you're right, that is a surprising decline for the team. Would be interesting to check their record without Gilmore in '84. Interesting about all of the 90's Bulls players, didn't notice that at first except for Cartwright and Paxson.
