The novel is -VERY- popular in Japan, infact, many of the children in school have to read it as part of the curriculum. Not to mention Miyazaki got ahold of Anne back in the 70s and produced an anime.
Today, Japanese girls have formed a cult-like following for Anne, and a good amount of the tourists that visit the Green Gables farm house are Japanese.
...so of course they would welcome the musical. Probably with a much great reception than Americans would...
