The Next Best Thing (2000) - Movie Trailer

Abbie Reynolds is a Los Angeles yoga instructor who is approaching 40 and has been burned by too many past relationships. Robbie Whitaker is a gay, aging Hollywood playboy who works as a gardener and has become Abbie's best friend. Their relationship takes a different turn when, after the funeral of a mutual friend who has died of AIDS, Abbie and Robbie get rip-roaring drunk and end up in bed together. Now that Abbie is pregnant and Robbie is still gay, the two decide to live together and form a happy family for the unborn Sam. However trouble arises when, six years later, Abbie falls in love with New York investment banker Ben and Robbie is forced to fight them for custody of Sam.

I'm an actress and my grandpa was an actor and we state that Madonna was brilliant here. Year, she overacted at the biginning but then her acting keeps getting better and better. The final scenes were so emotional and touching. Madonna did a great job. The same with Rupert

madonna will never win as an actress. her persona is just too strong and has a stigma unlike no other. every word that comes out of her mouth in a movie will always be put through a paper schredder to the masses

I'm a Madonna fan and I have to say Madonna can't act. But she does have star power and charm that's she's able to carry the movie somewhat. but the ending of this movie take a different route into drama territory that became a court move of madonna vs. the Rupert character.

@sara98900 They get into a custody battle over the son. Rupert contacts Michael Vartan (Kevin) who is the actual father, and he wins the case for Rupert. In the end Rupert and Madonna become friends again.

I really like the first half of this movie, but once they start having custody battles and not being friends anymore I don't like it. So I usually just watch the first half.
