Django Reinhardt - Swing 42 played and arranged by Tom Watkins on a Taylor 414CE. "Swing 42" is a gypsy swing jazz piece, and is so called because it was written in 1942. The main melody is from the original recordings but the middle section is my own solo. As you can see at the beginning, I recorded the backing chords first, then listened back to it and recorded the melody. Django was one of the first prominent jazz musicians to be born in Europe, and one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time. He is renowned for working with Stephane Grapelli, the legendary fiddler, but had to stop during the war as Stephane was from France and couldn't travel. When Django was 18 the caravan that he shared with his first wife burnt down, and while his family and neighbours were quick to pull him to safety he suffered first- and second-degree burns over half of his body. His right leg was paralyzed and the third and fourth fingers of his left hand were badly burnt. Doctors told him he would never play guitar again and intended to amputate his leg, but he refused surgery and was walking (with the aid of a cane) after a year. He also not only played guitar but went on to become one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time, all without the use of his third and fourth finger! If you look closely at the final picture you will see his third and fourth were permanently clawed down, but as a true testament to human adversity (and dedicated practice) he managed to achieve the blistering speeds that can be heard in his recorded solos with only his first two fingers.

Great job with Django's stuff, man. Just watched a few videos. Remember just cause Django played it doesn't mean it's gypsy swing. Hehe. But still, good fuckin job, I play mandolin and I'm just starting to pick up gypsy guitar. Hard shit.
