Who says only speedy dance can be impressive? Watch this dance piece on Darbari Aalapi. An excerpt from my latest production 'Magic Melange', a fusion of Indian and Western dances.

  • Oh Gosh...so inspiring every time! I´ve watched this clip so many times but each time, it´s so refreshing. Watching it, I can´t understand how someone can connect such a dignified dance with the profession of courtesans and such. So much elegance, dignity and purity.

  • @Khwaab , thank you so much.

  • This is not the typical kathak dance, but it's still beautifully done. Actually I like this better than the typical kathak dance. Many a times when one deviate from the standard forms, things don't work out so well. But I think this new form you've created is great. Just curious, are the 3 other dancers, students,or assistant instructors at your school?

  • @parleegee , the other dancers are my sr disciples as well as members of my troupe and teachers at 'Shambhavi Vaze's International School of Kathak'.

  • @azimramariz Indian classical dance takes many years to learn, just like any other classical art form. It really does take a lifetime to learn because there's so much to learn. It's best to learn from a teacher who can give you the right corrections in dance, that way you have the correct basic technique and also so you don't cause any injury to yourself. :-)

  • @parleegee I'm not sure what you think "typical Kathak dance" is, but what's performed here is very traditional Kathak. Everything from the music, movements, and costume are traditional in this Kathak style. Kathak is known for it's both it's slow and delicate to it's fast and sharp movements.

  • @Khwaab I agree, I must have watched this video 100x and always find it inspiring. But the courtesans did help to preserve Kathak, which would've been otherwise lost due to the British rule in India. So they had a very important place in Kathak's history.
