Players in the past have played with broken bones, even a broken neck. Its a different sport, different fitness, and how your body looks on the OUTside has no bearing on how healthy you are on the inside. I know fat Marines who can march 30 miles carry their pack thats heavier than any sporting equipment. Ironmen's bodies vary massively. IT DOESNT MATTER
