This is such an excellent song. I purchased a CD of Ray Whitley from a small label, but unfortunately most of the tracks on it are slow crooners. These songs that he sang in his films are really wonderful and energetic and he yodels great! I wish somehow they could get them and put them all on a CD.
@MAGICPORT To my knowledge, you're correct. I've taken the songs from all of the movies that Ray Whitley and Tim Holt were in and copied the songs that he performed into MP3 format. I'll upload them on Youtube. The only movie I don't have, which I accidentally taped over in a moment of idiocy, is Thundering Hoofs. Ray and Tim were in a total of 12 movies together.
This tune is called "Tumbleweed Cowboy" from the Tim Holt movie "Cyclone on Horseback". Whopper over there, who was growled at by the waiter, had the idea of having Smokey (Ray Whitley) sing a little ditty as a stall tactic, because neither had the money required to pay for their food. Then Whopper gets the idea of the collection plate to pay for their vittles. Ray Whitley was a phenominal singer and songwriter.
And so it was written. To my knowledge the movie songs were never recorded (records) or published in sheet music or folio form. If anyone knows different please inform me
I had coffee with Ray and another person here in Boston several times, when Ray was the advance man for the
Gene Autry rodeo. Don't know if you know how Back In The Saddle Again came to be written. This is according to Ray himself . One day he received a call from a studio that wanted him for a film and also wanted a song. Ray said to his wife. "Looks like I'm back i n the saddle again" and she replied "Hey that's a great title for a song - Back In The Saddle," continued in another post
You probably will never find a recording of it, unless someone made it from the actual film or a video clip, as I have. Most of Ray Whitley's songs, including Back In The Saddle Again (until Gene Autry got the rights to it) were written for movies only. He made at least one with Tex Ritter (name escappes me now) and a lot with Tim Holt.

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's good.
