NASA is ready to move forward with the development of the Space Launch System -- an advanced heavy-lift launch vehicle that will provide an entirely new national capability for human exploration beyond Earth's orbit.

NASA BEGINS COMMERCIAL PARTNERSHIP WITH ALLIANT TECHSYSTEMS

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA and Alliant Techsystems (ATK) of Salt
Lake City have agreed to collaborate on the development of the
company's Liberty Launch System as part of the agency's Commercial
Crew Development Round 2 activities.

The unfunded Space Act Agreement (SAA) through NASA's Commercial Crew
Program will allow the agency and ATK to review and discuss Liberty
system requirements; safety and certification plans; computational
models of rocket stage performance; and avionics architecture
designs. The agreement outlines key milestones including an Initial
System Design review, during which ATK will present to NASA officials
the Liberty systems level requirements, preliminary design, and
certification process development.

"This agreement will provide the opportunity to look at the Liberty
system to understand its design solution and risks, its capabilities
and how it could be used to fly our NASA crew," said Ed Mango, NASA's
Commercial Crew Program manager. The program is based at the agency's
Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

NASA will provide feedback to ATK based on its human spaceflight
experience for advancing crew transportation system capabilities and
the agency's draft human certification requirements.

"With this SAA we believe NASA will benefit from gaining insight into
the various systems we are developing, and we can benefit from the
feedback," said Kent Rominger, vice president, strategy and business
development for ATK Aerospace. "In the end, we hope to offer a
commercial solution to NASA, the Department of Defense, and other
commercial human spaceflight programs."

  • NASA's problems are the same as the Federal Governments. They rely on a drug addict for a plan to stop drugs. Just like NASA will only consider a rocket system from the same same contractors that FAILED us with Shuttle. It does not matter what the vehicle is, if they same contractors make it, they want it. First Constellation, then Liberty, and now STS. They keep re-branding the same parts in different configurations until we finally buy it.

  • @ti994apc I’ll give you a good analogy to analyse; two men went to see the bank manager for a loan to open their own business. One who is very good in mathematical things and accounting and always fared well in matters for the company he was working for, the other, already having had his own business before but went bankrupt – who do you think the manager will give the loan to? NASA did well and made the right decision.

  • @truemaskedwabbit More like a bank manager who loans other peoples money. Several people want a loan, but the bank manager keeps giving out loans to his own family, yet his family members constantly fail and need a constant stream of money. The Bank manager does not care, because its not his money and everyone in his family is getting paid. Yet, there are successful businessmen who can take a fraction of the money and be a big success. Bad decision not for NASA, but for the Taxpayer.

  • @truemaskedwabbit In reality, Lockheed "donates" to senator campaign funds, and the senators vote to buy all their stuff. The good'o'boy system. Who cares about progress or advancement, it is who is "getting paid." That why SLS is dubbed "Senate Launch System" because it was deigned by senators rather than actual rocket scientists. They make is "look" as much like Apollo so that the public thinks they are getting something good. NASA does not want better alternatives.
