This is a great overlooked Jimmy Clanton 45 from 1963. Even with the chart hits stopping (for a few years, anyway), Jimmy kept putting out killer 45's such as this one. This was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield and was produced by Al Kasha (who is one of those people who I end up buying every 45 i see his name appear on because you already know it will be a good one). Neil also cut his own version of the song but in my opinion it's not nearly as good as this one. You can catch great records like this every night of the week live at www.topshelfoldies.org!

  • I had never heard this one before. I see it was written by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield, and it does have somewhat of a Sedaka sound to it. Greenfield was a co-writer (with someone else, possibly Helen Miller) of Clanton's big hit, "Venus in Blue Jeans". Have you ever come across a Jimmy Clanton song called "I Care Enough (to Give the Very Best")?

  • @rslitman "I Care..." is the B side of Cindy, which is the side of that 45 that i prefer (i don't own the 45 unfortunately, it's a tough one to come by!)

  • @rslitman Neil Sedaka also did a version of this song (this one is better). Venus In Blue Jeans was written by Howie Greenfield and Jack Keller, I believe.

  • @rslitman I didn't realize that I Care Enough To Give The Very Best was an early Neil Diamond record, either.....

  • I don';t remeber this one by Jimmy but I do remember his #1 hit, "vENUS iN bLUE jEANS". This is an okey song & I'm sure if it had been played here it would of gone top 10 for a month....Thx4 postin'

  • Neil Sedaka recorded this first, but it was shelved in favor of "Next Door To An Angel". The Sedaka version was not released until 1977 on the compilation album, "Neil Sedaka: The '50's And '60's"

  • @TopshelfTom I have a copy of "Cindy" backed with "I Care Enough"

  • Nice one!! Why this wasn't a hit I'll never know.

  • "I Care Enough (To Give the Very Best)" was written by Neil Diamond and Carl D'Errico and showed up on a various artists CD of 1960s Neil Diamond songs put out by Ace in the UK last year. I had been looking for it on YouTube in order to put it into a playlist of songs written by but never recorded by Neil Diamond. After I posted my question to you the other day, I did another search and found that someone had uploaded it here within the past week.
