PhD in counseling. What is that supposed to mean ?

SFGadFly, I was commenting on the views of evangelical Christians. I consider myself a Christian, but I am not "uncomfortable" with gay sex even though I have no desire to try it. I have met many Christians who are gay. I believe in salvation for all, and that includes gay people. I also believe that sexual orientation is primarily genetic and that some day in the very near future this will be scientifically established. When that happens, the tide will turn and this issue will be no more!

@Tennessee3501 I take it you two got a room then?

@Tennessee3501 If he has a Ph.D. in psychology then he can be held accountable for malpractice. That's what "reparative therapy" is - psychological torturing of the vulnerable who lack adequate support systems to accept themselves. It's not a matter of belief but one of ethics and a commitment to doing no harm. Approx. 8% (U.S.) have a post-grad education but it won't make one educated w/o the sense to know what to do with it. Better educated? An arrogant tragi-comedy would be more apt.

@Tennessee3501 Yet, she says her upbringing wasn't ideal and elevates it while the American Academy of Pediatrics published data ranking lesbian parents/ting at the top. Imagine them as your parents and being gay. Who would come out or open up to them!? It's tragic - LGBTQ youth are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide because of the messages they hear and bullying that follows. I hope the Bachmanns re-think their approach because lives are at stake and blood is on their hands.

@Tennessee3501 Uh-uh, no. For better/worse, the lives of those in the spotlight are, well - as such, especially when there's public funding involved. Her bio says: tax law at W & M U., but it's suspect since there's no tax law program there. A degree isn't a halo effect but an idea about a specific area of study/expertise from a credentialed source. Ph.Ds should not be confused with M.D.s. One's a doctorate of philosophy, the other is medical. To intentionally conflate them is disingenuous.

@Tennessee3501 True, we don't know what causes heterosexuality but we're working on it. There's no specific eye color gene either, but three. Maybe science will yield more results, perhaps not. You say it's a sin for unmarried people to have sex while LGBTQ people are denied the right to marry. You cannot have it both ways and salvation is a private journey, not a collective one. At the core of this is your discomfort with gay sex regardless and that's your issue, no one else's.

@Rossyboy3000 Well said! Well, mostly - except the part where you say they're not killing people. There are documented cases of suicides who've gone through this psychological torture they call "reparative therapy"; an oxymoron at best. Most troubling about our peers/allies not seeing the danger in it is a tendency to let their advocates off the hook, as if our lives were any less valuable. Our blood is on their hands and important enough for them to know it.
Im not gay but this is fucked up! Thumbs up if you agree!

@Ideotera Here's the first problem ideotera: the solution they are offering them is based upon a lie; the scientifically incorrect notion that homosexuality is a disorder which requires 'treatment' or a çure'. The second problem is that the therapist is involved in a conflict of interest because he is providing his service in return for a healthy fee. So no, they're not killing people, but what they're doing (encouraging false hope in exchange for cash) is still wrong.
