[Please read] The sweetest voice this side of heaven.

The Liltin' Miss Martha Tilton was:

Vocalist for the Benny Goodman Orchestra (1937-1939). She performed to great acclaim in the band's famous Carnegie Hall concert on January 16, 1938.

The first artist signed to Capitol Records (1942).

My favorite female singer of the 1930s and 1940s. Martha could coo, could care, could put all the loveliness of life into her voice and make you a believer. My spirit always takes wing listening to Miss Martha T.—she was THE sunny honey of song.

Martha made a dozen or so film appearances—almost all of which are forgettable thanks to the poverty-row-studio production values by which she was surrounded. "Dancing on Air" is exceptional. It derives from a short musical variety film entitled SWING AND SING and was produced circa 1942. Like the best music videos of later decades, it concentrates on singer and song on stage. Martha's performance—bright, breezy, and cheerful—reflects well the qualities that distinguished both her professional and personal life.

  • Wow, she is downright beautiful.

If only I could have been born a few years earlier, I'd have married her. She looks great, sings great and has a great personality. I guess I was born too late.

  • I must say she sure is a looker!

  • I loved her in movies! she has such a beautiful voice!

  • What a beautiful smile she had.

  • She is good.

  • What a pretty gal to look at and listen to! I was just a toddler when she was in her prime. If I had been a little older I would most certainly had a crush on her! Thanks for the showing.

  • what a wonderful voice!

  • Thanks for the history update on Martha. Her voice was equal to the best in those times. A beauty too.
