I think it means like a craving was filled or they just like it so much they're like " ohhhh that hit the spot" not like a visual or a logical spot or mental even it's just like a little void being filled that's all

From the late 1800 and the early 1900's, that hit the spot refers to when the man of the house would come inside from farming and doing chores in the cold and his wife would give him his tea,coffee, or soup and when he drank it it would touch a spot in his throat or stomach and he would be warmed up and fullish. I think there is more than one definition though...
