Here's one for fans of psychedelic pop and jazz alike. Having grown up in Hungary, Szabo moved to the US in the 50s and in a few years became one of the most respected jazz guitarists in the world.
He frequently covered pop songs in his repertoire, including an amazing version of Sonny & Cher's "Bang Bang," which was featured on his 1966 album SPELLBINDER.
This mellow, drawn-out version of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" comes from his 1967 live album MORE SORCERY. The album was assembled from performances recorded at both the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Jazz Workshop in Boston.
In the late 60s Szabo moved from the ABC Impulse! jazz label to Skye Records, which he and a few musician friends of his owned. He continued to record acclaimed albums well into the 70s.
Unfortunately, only a paltry sampling of his prolific catalog has been released on CD.
I found my (promo) copy of the album in an antique mall in Ravenna, Ohio.

Great! I also recommend that you check out the ''SORCERER'' LP on Impulse,it has a great version of Sonny&Cher's ''Beat Goes On'',as well as a nice take on ''Mizrab''{from ''JAZZ RAGA''. Herbie Mann's ''WAILING DERVISHES'' LP is another nice exotic jazz piece with a version of ''Norwegian Wood''.

Did Mort Garson record a version of "Lucy"? I know some of Mort's songs, but not that.
