The Black irish band performs the traditional sea song,'Spanish Ladies' before a very small folk club in Southern California. No sound system was used, just like in the 1800s. Band member James Nelson sings lead on this number while the rest of the Black Irish Band Boys back him up. The recorded song can be found on the CD Album "Into the Arms of the Sea". Go to www.blackirish.com for more information, or CD-BABY under Black Irish Band to buy it.

  • The Black Irish Band is posting a new live recording of Spanish Ladies on You-Tube. It was recorded live this New years Eve, 2011 in Monterey California. And by the way, it is another American version of the song, NOT ENGLISH!!!!!

  • Robert Shaw sings a very creepy version of this song a few times in Jaws...i like it lol

  • As previously stated, this song originally came from sailors in the British Navy. But it would be wrong to say it was 'stolen' by the Americans. Many British civillians were 'pressed' against their will into service in His Majesty's navy. Some were so bitter about this that they swapped sides by jumping ship or after being captured as POW's. So a lot of British tradition went with them into the American Navy during the Anglo-American wars.

Just to set the record straight!

    It is a great song.

  • I was wondering what that impeccable human's voice took its accent from as well. I wish it were American, of some sort, because then I would sound like that. Cheers Gents, this is fantastic. Where do I buy your CD?

  • i was looking for a good cover on youtube for about 10 mins before i found this MARVELOUS

  • This is an excellent rendition. I was trying to find this song after watching Peter Weir's film "Master and Commander" (which contains a portion of it), and stumbled upon this video. Great work, Gentlemen.

  • hmmm. Although many ENGLISH sailors were pressed into Naval service, I seriously doubt any significant number jumped ship or swapped sides because they were bitter. I think its a case of Americans taking something European and re inventing it ..... I find America is more influenced by French and Irish traditions and culture than it is by English.

  • Just bought your song on iTunes.. Can't get it outta my noodle!

  • Loved it!! Touched the soul!

  • First time I heard this song, it reminded me of the Newfoundland song "We'll Rant and We'll Roar" The courses are very similar. Must be the Irish heritage along the Atlantic Coast of North America that has the two song so similar.

  • Please post the lyric's to this version, i've gotta say that this is the best version i've ever heard. You guys are really good.
