Sorry for this (very) lengthy reply. Again, I appreciate that you were able to consider an alternative view. If all conservative Christians were similarly open-minded, I might still count myself among the Catholic ranks.

I believe, if everyone were willing to accept everyone else's rights (your right to practice your religion and my gay friends' rights to a private, civil marriage ceremony) the world would be a much happier place.

  • @actheaterstudent

Parents and churches will always have the right to instruct children in their care as they see fit. However, the treatment of homosexuality in some churches can be damaging to children who learn, from a very young age, that being born a certain way makes them bad people.

Learning about homosexuality will not turn anyone gay. I am as straight as a ruler. But, it could save the lives of many young, gay children who often grow up feeling alone, unworthy, and unloved.

  • @actheaterstudent

Of course, all religions have the freedom to preach their doctrines as they see fit. As long as homosexuals continue to be demonized, however, gay children will continue to suffer. Children who are afraid to come out in school for fear of being bullied. Children who are afraid to come out in church for fear of being demonized. Children who are afraid to come out to their own *parents* for fear of being thrown out or worse.

  • @actheaterstudent

Homosexuality is not something that can be cured or prayed away -- anymore than my heterosexuality. It just is.

As long as children are made to grow up with the belief that they are evil, just for being born as they are, the suicides will only continue. The bullying against LGBT kids will worsen. And ALL of society will suffer as a result.

Gay children from conservative religious backgrounds, in particular, have had even higher incidences of suicide.

  • @actheaterstudent

Regarding the acceptance of the LGBT community in society, consider this: there has been an epidemic of gay teen suicides as of late. Something like 5 or 6 that have made national news in the past month alone. Whatever certain religions have to say about homosexuality, mainstream medicine, from the American Medical Association to the American Psychological Association has determined that sexual orientation is NOT a choice, but something you are born with.

  • @actheaterstudent

I appreciate that you would be willing to compromise. No one else I've ever talked to has been open-minded enough to consider reaching a solution that would make everyone happy, so kudos to you. Again, the religious rights of churches would be respected. No church would be required to marry any couple whose sexual orientation clashed with the church's religious doctrine.

Just as a straight couple wanting to marry could get a completely secular ceremony, so could a gay couple.

  • @2MixFix however the very first state that allowed gay marriage does not have that. They have a highly gay friendly government that is out of control.

  • @2MixFix I don't care if gay's get married as long as the government does not become extremely gay friends and extremly unfriendly to orthodox christians. As long as it provides alternatives for christian parents who do not belong to those decieving denominations that have come up with an excuse to accept homosexuality who don't want their version of tolerance being taught to their children. as long as they can ensure that there will be no favortism in government then I'm all for it!

  • @actheaterstudent

By the way, no one gives a flying fuck as to whether or not you "approve" of homosexuality. It exists and it's not going anywhere. Get used to it. This is a diverse society, and you can't just *ban* everything you don't like. If that were possible, then, believe me, conservative Christianity would've been made a capital offense long ago.

What if I decide that I don't *morally* approve of YOUR right to marry? Can I gather a group of bigots together and vote YOUR marriage away?

  • @actheaterstudent

Why so quick to assume I'm gay? I'm not. I have several friends who are, though, and they have just as much right to get married as I do. Your moral disapproval means absolutely nothing. And no religion *owns* marriage.

There are plenty of denominations, of many religions, who would be thrilled to marry gay couples. No church HAS to. By imposing a blanket ban on EVERYONE, however, you are infringing on the religious rights of those churches who WANT to marry gay couples.
