Letterman and Conan (moreso when he was on Late Night) have had the best musical performances on Late Night. Not sure about Carson cause I wasn't around to see his show in full.

I second that. I almost crashed my shitty car when I first heard this song. "These chains I been hearing now for most of my life". When lyrics surpass reason and interpretation and hit you on such an honest, accessible level, you can't help but be swept away by it.
