(pardon the shaky cam-work - the bridge is jiggley and I'm using a camera that's about 800 years old.)
Was biking on the Williamsburg Bridge this afternoon, and was getting ready to scream at the group of people stopped on the bike path... when I noticed that the reason they were all stopped and gawping upwards was that there was a neat chick (edit: Seanna Sharpe) doing some sheet acrobatics, hanging from the middle span of the bridge, which is super high-up. Good for her. It was fun.

  • Facing one's fears? How about facing one's stupidity? It's idiotic stunts like this with no regard for their own or other people's safety that gives aerialists a bad name. The more people do dumb ass stunts like this for attention, the harder it gets for aerialists with REAL training and experience and knowledge to do their work without problems. Good for the cops for nailing those two morons.

  • I, and a lot of other people agree with you, Liz.

  • People who get upset at this kind of performance forget that we are NOT all created alike. Personally, I wish I could have looked through her eyes and seen the view from up there. And for those who say it's dangerous, well, when in all of history are we not entertained by daredevils? If this kind of stuff pisses you off maybe you should get off your tush and try a little adrenaline rush yourself and see how exhilarating it can be. I think the performance was beautiful. Kudos Seanna Sharpe!

  • hahahah, "tush"

  • Darky, I think a lot of people are very torn about this as well.

And, her and her handler did get arrested, and had the book thrown at them.

  • @kylemfwelch1 Lastly, there are far better ways for Seanna to bring her skill to the public WITHOUT endangering herself or the audience: how about a free open house class, free demonstrations, street festival performances? Other aerialists who take safety issues seriously have been able to get their art out to the public without resorting to breaking the law.

  • @kylemfwelch1 In addition, these kinds of stunts make it extremely difficult for aerialists to get liability insurance and it DOES give aerial dance a bad name - try talking to riggers, event directors, and venue managers who will tell you that you're not allowed to perform in a particular space because they've heard of bad incidents. It doesn't seem like you've had to be on the inside of the profession dealing with these issues.

  • @kylemfwelch1 I am not debating the beauty of aerial dance, I am debating whether this was really an appropriate way to show it to the public. She endangered herself needlessly, and motorists and pedestrians who had no choice where they were at that time. She could have dropped equipment while setting up which would've easily injured or killed anyone underneath, never mind the unnecessary risk of falling directly on her audience and motorists just trying to get across the bridge.

  • ps, this gives aerialists a bad name? are people really walking around complaining about aerialists? ever? hmmm, someones jealous.

  • @lizdcooper

Liz, as an (assumed) aerialist, I really cannot understand how you cannot see the beauty of this performance. I also do not see how you can compare "aerialists with REAL training", to someone with over 8 years of training, who runs a school, and has toured the world, as an aerialist. What more does it take? I find amazing inspiration from Seanna, it is reminiscent of Phillipe Petit, a daring art, that the world will not have many more opportunities to see.

  • It would have been much more entertaining if she had partially disrobed and masturbated at some point.
