@sid203 ferdinand porsche orders that he wanted a sporty vw beetle! and porsche was born.:D

I think he forgot to turn on the a/c

@CarTechnica You need a/c in the cayman because of the heat build up in the Cayman, the engine is right behind you and even in winter the cabin gets pretty stuffy and claustrophobic.
-
You forget to mention how this car is de-tuned for the UK market.

Excellent review. Would have been nice to get the Cayman R onto a track with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires and also a GT3RS and perhaps a BMW M series for a more round comparison. A Ferrari 360 Modena would most likely be somewhat faster and perhaps corner with more agility however the price difference rules out a valid comparison. I think it is time for me to move up from my Cayman S, as much as I love it, to the new Cayman R. I'll shoot my own video when I can.
CarandDriver just tested the handling of the GT3 and Cayman R. The Cayman was slightly behind the GT3 in each test. While that would suggest that the rear-engined GT3 is the better handler, the Cayman R was on road tires while the GT3 was using Michelin Pilot Sport Cub tires (road legal, but as slick as the law allows). The GT3 was also aided by its 105 hp advantage in the slaloms and handling circuits. If the Cayman had the same tires and hp, it would have easily won.

@marshknute The difference in tyres did make that test somewhat pointless, however, I doubt the Cayman R would have easily won even if it were running Pilot Cups. The GT3 is an astonishingly accomplished car, especially with that Metzger engine in the rear.
With the Cayman R on cups it would have been close, but on any track where the GT3 can stretch its legs, it will leave the Cayman way behind. Nordschleife times - Cayman R 7:56, GT3 7:40. Although the Cayman R time is still damn good.

All Porsches are a bit bug-like... it's the Beetle heritage, as distant as it may be.

@sid203 In the UK you'll be lucky if you need air-con three or four times a year, so I'm happy to live without the weight and cost. Plus, you're sapping power every time you use it.
That said, having driven through Nevada, Utah and New Mexico in June/July, there's no way I'd not spec air-con if I lived over there, or anywhere else that hot :)
As for the radio - I've gotta have some tunes on my way to the track!
