roxycubangurl is right salsa was developed in Cuba, Cuba was were the spanish and African cultures mixed through dance.

there are dance styles all over the world in which there are hip movements, but that doesn't neccessarily mean that they all came from belly dancing...i dont see what harm there is in admitting that...different people can think similarily cant they? :-)

minus the fact that spain was ruled by moors and had VERY strong cultural and religious ties to the arab world until around 1500 CE. and the fact that musically andalucia (the region known from flamenco) has been connected to north africa (a muslim area) since way before then.
on the other hand, ethnically, the movements of salsa and samba have west african roots, as the dances originated from slaves.
