~How To Save A Life~ Chapter 3

I work at the Oasis Garden Spa as a massage therapist. Its supposed to be relaxing job, but, I was too wound up about the case. I looked at the clock practically every 5 minutes. I even hurt a patient because I gave him a deep tissue when I was supposed to be giving a relaxing shiatsu.

I was relieved when I got off and as soon as I was through those huge double doors, I whipped out my phone and called Taylor.

"Rena?"

"Yes, I'm off and I'm on my way."

"Ok, see you soon."

"Bye."

I hung up, sprinted to my car, and sped out of the parking lot. My job is only 10 minutes from the police station, but an accident on Beverly Avenue turned that into 45 minutes. While sitting in traffic, Taylor texted me.

-Dont take Beverly, 4 car accident-

I rolled my eyes and answered him.

-Too late-

-How long till you get here?-

I pulled forward and the station came into view.

-Maybe 10 mins, Im lookin at the station right now-

-Ok, well Im standing outside, so when you get here come see me-

-K-


10 minutes of traffic later, I pulled into the station lot. Taylor was leaning against the outside wall with a set of car keys in his hand. While I parked, I wondered to myself, maybe hes going somewhere. I got out and walked over to him.

"Why do you have car keys?"

"We're going somewhere."

He took my hand and guided me to a sleek, black Lexus. I climbed into the passenger seat, while he started the engine.

"Where are we going?"

He had that hard mask on his face again. He just backed out, shifted into drive, and pulled out onto Mason.

"Hello, where are we going?"

He kept his mouth in a hard line, but said, "You'll see."

We drove in silence all the way to our destination, which I recognized immediately as we pulled in. Maggiano's. It was a small, family-oriented, Italian Restaurant. It was also the place where we celebrated Brians birthday.

Taylor parked and we sat there for a minute. Then he got out, walked around, and opened my door for me. I stepped out of the car.

Through gritted teeth, I said, "Why did you bring me here?"

"Bringing you back to the crime scene is the best way to jog your memory."

"I already told you that I remember everything, you didn't need to bring me back."

"And I told you we were starting over. And this is the best place to start. Now, where were you guys?"

I walked him over to the section where we were, but stopped. There was a bright red pickup truck sitting in one of the spots. And smirking in the drivers seat, was Steven Lakefield.

My heart skipped a beat and my legs felt like jello. I heard Taylor call my name, but he sounded like he was underwater. All I could focus on was that truck. I'd never felt so terrified in my life. I wanted to talk, to tell Taylor that Lakefield was HERE, in this very parking lot, but my breath caught in my throat.

I felt myself drop to my knees, and then Taylor came and kneeled in front of me.

I finally managed a shaky whisper, "He's here..."

"I know; I saw him. But I'm more worried about you right now."

The tears I was trying to hold back finally spilled over. Taylor brought me close to his chest, and I cried there. He constantly rubbed my back and told me it was gonna be ok. Even if I didnt believe him, it made me feel betterjust like Brian used to do whenever I was upset.

He picked me up and supported me all the way back to the car. Once we got there, he turned me towards him.

"You don't have to do this part again. Not after what just happened."

"Thank you..."

"Let me get you something to eat."

"I'm not hungry," I said.

"You need something in your stomach."

"Not Maggiano's, please."

"No, not here, somewhere else. Come on."
