We need your help! Visit: http://www.protectchagos.org and sign the petition. You can make a difference.

We have until 12th February to convince the UK Government to save the Chagos Islands, one of the greatest marine environments left on Earth, by creating a protected area larger than the Great Barrier Reef.

Why Chagos? The Chagos archipelago is home to the largest coral atoll in the world, and is the most biodiverse marine ecosystem under UK jurisdiction.

The UK is committed to protecting marine biodiversity, both through its own Marine Access Bill and also through numerous EU and international agreements.

But what is so special about the Chagos Islands and waters? What are the values that deserve recognition and protection?

Creating one of the worlds greatest conservation areas
Located in the centre of the Indian Ocean, the Chagos contain the worlds largest coral atoll and the greatest marine biodiversity in the UK by far.

It also has one of the healthiest reef systems in the cleanest waters in the world, supporting half the total area of good quality reefs in the Indian Ocean.

As a result, the ecosystems of the Chagos have so far proven resilient to climate change and environmental disruptions.

  • I am with the Chagos Natives. Not with you "Environmental fucktards.

If you wanna protect the environment, why don't you exile the marines who stay there now?

  • SHAME ON YOU! First abandon everything you possess for the benefit of the planet before you deny some one else their home.

    Disingenuous hypocrites

  • @konstantinNeo he he.. try 'Guantanamo' as well!

  • @mykingdomforanus The islanders lived in perfect harmony with their environment until US troops moved in, gassed everyone's dogs to death and locked the islanders up in cargo ships, sitting on sacks of birdshit before being dumped in Mauritius slums. Creating a nature reserve has never excluded people from living in it, nor compensate for this horrible crime. The terms of the reserve are specifically to prevent the islanders from going home, as the lease is ending in 2016. Cynical. Shameful.

  • I think this group has been set up by the UK and US governments...its all bollocks saving f*cking fish ...how about the islanders who were illegally removed Give them their homes back and let them decide if they want a Marine park or not.

Its all tactics to keep them off their island homes

  • Islanders lose out. However, the marine life in this reserve win.

The Islanders would have, like everywhere, just slaughtered everything until it was all gone. Then what.

The Islanders need to be compensated, but the marine reserve is so so important.

  • Yeah. I will not be signing this petition. I am with the islanders in their struggle to return home!

  • Not that I'm not totally on-board with environment-protection, but since when did protecting marine wildlife become more important than protecting human life?

By now there's enough evidence to unequivocally state that the establishment of a marine protection zone was done in order to quell all the chances of the Chagossians of returning to the homeland that they were illegally and maliciously torn away from. So I'm not too clear on the "victory" here...

  • Have you wondered why you cannot see anything of the Chagos Archipelago in google maps?
