That's most likely NOT normal! I did on the first go when I figured out which "survival battle" mode to take. If I remembered right, um.... Easy = Mirah Unlocked, Normal = Capt. Dax Unlocked, Hard = Kai unlocked... um I forgot the fourth thing to get Raja unlocked.......

Of course you can, don't think like that!
All you have to do is find some runes in any character's story, utilize your set correctly, and stay alive. Even if you have to go long-ranged target-spell sniping which could take a while to do, just keep cool and take out the enemy.
I certainly did that long-ranged sniping tactic myself.

If this is Stage 7-B (I think, stage 7-Boss, in the cave stage), that's a pain, but can be countered somewhat...
Here's where the missile swarm comes to mind.
My set:
Rune-1: Speed Boost, Rune-2: Auto MP regen.
Get rid of the pests first. Back off and shoot those meteors and fire-bolt swarmers at them if it gets irritating. Use sword drive if impacted by the corrupt character. Back off and charge, then do it again. The flying enemy boss is a MUST for Lock-On swarmer fire, but be careful!
