I like both versions. Gabriel raises the octave and keeps the spirit of the song. The detractors here are really mean spirited. The original is always better because they wrote it and they had the genius to. Think of Peter's as a tribute. Peter Gabriel loves this song. Shouldn't that be enough reason not to insult him? Peter's version is beautiful anyway, and it gives new meaning to the original. Howabout you try to cover a song in your own individual style and tell me how that works out
