I love this great man: Richard Crooks. I heard him the first time when I was 10 years old. His Holy City. And I never could forget this beautiful voice, his artresty, his wonderful taste.
This was the song played in the movie "Snake Pit", with Olivia DeHavilland, in which she played a mentally ill woman who was placed in an asylum, treated by a very kind doctor, and managed to get out. i believe it was based on a true story.
The scene with this song, played on the faces of men and women who appeared to be actual patients- it was incredibly touching and poignant, and brings me to tears- as does this song.
Crooks, the best american tenor of the last century, does wonderfully.
