Summer, '99. Punk-rock pancake place in Portsmouth, NH. Me: Heartbroke and out of my mind dissillusioned and depressed in an unreal, other-worldly way. No sense of a future. This song comes on the speakers and I'm floored. My ears are always hungry for a new sound, and this struck my mood so much and reminded me A LOT of the English Tornadoes...same nostalgic / maudlin / crazy-imaginative songwriting. Been a fan ever since, but can't stay too long. A band to get over...like a girl.
Agreed, Charm of the Highway Strip is one of my favourite albums of all time. Gotta say though, I reckon John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats has written more songs, at least two or three hundred. He's another of my favourite songwriters, you should check him out. ^_^
I'm a huge Magnetic Fields fan, but I checked out Mountain Goats on your recommendation alone and so far I've been impressed. I've heard "This Year" and "Woke Up New" so far. Which songs should I not miss?
Oooh... There's so much material there it's hard to say. My highly recommended albums would be "Tallahassee", "The Coroner's Gambit" and all time favourite "All Hail West Texas" (concept album about a young offenders' institute in Texas). You can download any of these by torrent.
