from what i understand, waters lost his father in the war, and this song was atribute to him. i'm sure waters must have supported the outcome, but the pain of losing his father must have been devastaing.

I think the issue isn't whether or not the British should have fought in WWII (as if they had a choice) but the way it was fought. In both world wars (especially the first) there were generals who thought nothing of carelessly throwing wave after wave of men against the enemy guns, casualties be damned. Field Marshall Haig was notorious for it.
Of course, this song is from the POV of a kid losing his father in a war. It's probably supposed to be more emotive than rational.
