I like Western Swing music - a nice, steady beat with lots of violins, acoustic and lap steel guitars. The two/three-part harmonies on this record are superb, which makes me think that there is something unique about the timbre of the American voice.

Actually, if you wish to be precise, Cooley's heyday was the mid to late forties. Otherwise, I'll take your word for it! ;)

My mom would sing this time we saw a "Detour" sign & we would all join in. My kids just think I'm crazy when I do it now!

I think of my granfather every time I here this. We used to sing to the high heavens and have a great time together.

Spade Cooley didn't predate Wills he just played his swing in California particularly out of the Venice Pier Ballroom, Santa Monica Pier Ballroom, on KTLA-TV where 75% of all tv's in LA were tuned to his show on Saturday nights. He also had parts in several movies. Cooley was more 50's swing, nad Wills was more 30's swing. One was the beginning and the other was the end. Wills played his swing from Texas, there is a difference.
