Are we living through the end of Western dominance? Niall Ferguson, the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University and William Ziegler Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, says we are. While the West developed what Ferguson calls six "killer apps" (competition, science, medicine, the rule of law, consumerism, and the Protestant work ethic), these are are no longer monopolized by the West. Like open-source apps or free App-Store software, they are available to all and have multiplied throughout the world. The reason they have so multiplied is that they worked wonders for creating wealth and power. Nations who did not tap into their phenomenal utility remained mired in poverty and backwardness.
