EDIT 3/16/10: Oh my goddess! I just saw this vid broke 1000 views! I feel so happy that people like this! ^_^

I've been wanting to use a song from Heather Dale (love her music!). Figured, this one's up-beat for the most part and fun and actually tells a story.

"Culhwch and Olwen" belongs to Heather Dale
FFVII and anything associated belongs to Square Enix.

Culhwch ~ Cloud (duh)
Olwen ~ Tifa
Culhwch's Mother ~ Rufus (don't ask me why)
King Arthur ~ Sephiroth (irony?)
Sir Kei ~ Kadaj (Kei was Arthur's brother, after all)
Sir Bedwyr ~ Loz
Sir Gawain ~ Yazoo
Menw (Old name for Merlin) ~ Red XIII
Cynddylig ~ Cait Sith
Ysbaddaden ~ Bahamut SIN
Mabon ~ Denzel
Blackbird of Cilgwri ~ Vincent (who didn't see that coming?)
Stag of Rhedynfre ~ Reno/Rude
Eagle of Gwernabwy ~ Cid
Salmon of Llyn Llyw ~ Aeris

Culhwch, son of Cilydd, a nobleman of Wales
was counselled by his mother to seek Olwen as a bride.
Fair Olwen, only daughter of the giant Ysbaddaden
Who would never let her marry, for when she wed he'd die.

Arthur's knights they joined him: Kei, Bedwyr and Gawain
With Menw the magician and Cynddylig as their guide
And so they travelled onwards to the lands of Ysbaddaden
Where they came upon his castle, and rode their steeds inside.

"Before you have my daughter bring me Mabon son of Modron
Who was taken from his mother even as his lips first cried."
"I know that I can do so, 'though you think it be not easy."
Said good Culhwch to the giant as he called the knights to ride.

They sought the ancient wisdom of the Blackbird of Cilgwri,
And asked him, "Know ye Mabon, stolen from his mother's side?"
The Bird showed them an anvil that his beak had rendered small
And said, "Though I am ancient, there are older hearts than I."

They found the Stag of Rhedynfre who stood beside a stump
and asked him, "Know ye Mabon, stolen from his mother's side?"
"This oak was once a sapling rooted first when I was young,
But I'm not the oldest animal nor greatest in my pride."

So on the party travelled to the Eagle of Gwernabwy
And asked him, "Know ye Mabon, stolen from his mother's side?"
The Eagle showed a pebble that was once a mountain high,
but he said, "Despite this evidence, one goes more deep than I."

They traveled to the water and the Salmon of Llyn Llyw.
They said, "Know ye of Mabon, son of Modron and his bride?"
"Indeed I've heard his wailing in his prison all these years,
And for Arthur's faith and honour, his companions I will guide."

And so the Salmon led them up the river to a tower,
Where they heard the lamentations of the prisoner inside.
But the stonework of the castle couldn't stand before the army;
Mabon pledged his life to Arthur, and homeward all did ride.

So Culhwch and companions went with speed to see the giant
With elation in their hearts and lost Mabon at their side.
They severed off the head of the oathbound Ysbaddaden,
And that was how good Culhwch won fair Olwen for his bride.

  • This video was well done from a technical standpoint, but the overall tone of the clips you used make a really jarring tone clash with the light and bouncy tune of the song. Advent Children just doesn't fit very well with light and upbeat.

Don't take this as an insult, because it's not meant to be one. You really are skilled, I just think you could have picked a better show to go with this song.

  • @UrpleSquirrel Constructive criticism is always welcome ^_^ It'd been swimming around in my head for a while and I was bored. It did take a while to find clips that wouldn't clash *too* badly, but actually, I paid the most attention to which characters got assigned what "roles" (ex. Cid as the Eagle, Aerith as the Salmon, Bahamut SIN as the ogre, Denzel as Mabon, etc.).

  • I can't believe someone's made a song about culhwch and Olwen, - i'm well impressed! i'm from Wales and my name's Olwen you see, and that was my favourite book when I grew up! xx

  • @chibirosa I became familiar with the story from this song, actually

  • @hhuntahh Um, a teacher at UCLA pointed this out? Seriously? Well, I feel awfully embarrassed now, lol. Not exactly what I expected when I made the video out of boredom....

  • @18yrsandolder Harris is not a TA; he's a guest speaker. For all I know he will note this conversation in his lecture next year.
