The Free Hetherington is once again re-opened!

The Free Hetherington is once again re-opened, this time with the express permission of uni management, who agreed to allow us to return to the building after sending in police to violently evict us. An occupation of the senate ensued which was so successful that management were forced to admit that the entire operation had been a huge failure and return our access to the building.

COME JOIN US, POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
All meeting times and free provisions of services and educational and fun events still apply!

***************************

We were forcibly evicted from the Free Hetherington after 7 weeks of occupation on Tuesday 22nd March. We immediately marched to the main University building and are currently occupying the Senate rooms! Come join us. :)

****************************

The Hetherington is re-open: come down for tea & coffee, wi-fi, study space, a cool place to hang out and to participate in the running of the occupation! There's people on the doors 24 hours a day.

There is an announcement list for the group; to join, send a blank email to freehetheringtonannounce+subscribe@googlegroups.com

Occupation meetings (decisions are made here):
Tuesday 5 - 7pm
Thursday 5 -7pm
Saturday 3 - 5pm

13 University Gardens, Glasgow University

Our Demands:

The Hetherington Research Club to be returned to democratic control by students and staff, with the return of the block grant. All those who lost their jobs as a result of the closure should be offered their jobs back.

Anton Muscatelli should condemn the cuts and student fees and take the average wage of university staff, or resign.

No cuts at Glasgow University. We demand no job cuts, no course cuts, no cuts to student services, no cuts to teaching budgets and an end to the voluntary severance scheme.

Glasgow University must become a democratic place of lifelong learning for all residents of Glasgow.

We demand investment in higher education and wider public services and an end to the Government's programme of austerity.

  • Thank God we have one MSP who isn't a complete dick

  • Tu suces?

  • Those two are talking absolute rubbish. The police were most definately not heavy handed from the footage seen. This lot are known for being violent with some being reportedly being involved in the violent protests in London. They had also previously beaten up a security guard from the university and other students. Really nice group of people so they are.

  • I don't know if this has been mentioned already but the Hetherington (as a post grad club) wasn't an "early victim of cuts".

  • I can assure you that people who study theology aren't all perpetuating nonsensical myths and are in fact more likely to disprove them via a historical understanding of their bases, as well as displaying complex abstract reasoning ability. Analysing and understanding belief systems throughout history allows understanding of societies and cultures today, especially when cultural differences underlie major world tensions (eg suicide bombers). Whether you regard this as relevant is your choice.

  • @eilidho So, since my brain cells are undisturbed, perhaps you can rattle them for me and offer an explanation of why somebody would want to have written the thesis I've just linked you to. Why would somebody want to formulate relationships between two things they state are unrelated, and get a PhD thesis out of it? I've exhausted myself in trying to find an answer to this question, and clearly I am not cultured enough to ever understand. So please, enlighten me, oh cultured one.

  • @eilidho What nonsense you have uttered. Theology IS a waste of space... it's a degree in fairies at the bottom of the garden, and people who become learned in it often go on to perpetuate such nonsensical myths. If you'd like a typical example of the complete uselessness of theology, here's a link to a theology PhD thesis, containing my favourite first line to a thesis ever. See if you can spot what's so funny. theses.gla.ac.uk/498/

  • @eilidho So yes, cuts may have to be made, but eradicating whole cultural areas is wrong and damaging to society as a whole. People need roses as well as bread in their lives.

  • Sadly most of the engineers I know don't know or care how to read, write or spell. With the odd exception they are less cultured than a yoghurt. This also applies to many of the other 'useful' careers. People who say things like 'theology is a complete waste of space' clearly have never disturbed their own brain cells enough to think about why people learn about these things, or what the effect of having learned people is to society as a whole.

  • @seattle0sound Don't get my wrong, I'm very interested in politics, philosophy, and many of the arts subjects (although some, like theology are just a complete waste of space). But when it comes to deciding the university budget, you can't just pretend that all subjects are equal in utility. When you need to tighten the belt, obviously it's going to be the subjects which produce little research and few industry-ready graduates.
