This was the final video piece in the 'Souvenirs from the Butte' Performance. Originally, 'Sourdough Mike' McDonald was set to perform the finale in person and play his roll of duct tape (poetry in motion!) Sadly, our beloved teddy bear baritone died of pancreatic cancer that month. We dedicated this to him...and all the great memories and music he gave us. No one will ever sing the Alaska Flag Song the way Mike could...

  • It was less than 10 years ago, more like 7 or 8. I was lucky enough to personally know this man, he taught music classes at all of the elementary schools in Anchorage and I was (still am) best friends with one of his three sons. A truly wonderful and caring soul who was taken from us much too early, RIP Mike "Sourdough Mike" McDonald

  • @Famz0rz Mike was amazing. I actually did a story about one of Mike's classes for KAKM. He helped the kids compose their own lyrics and melodies and then they performed for their parents. He gave them something special. I hope the 'boys' are doing okay. I know it was rough for them especially after Mike died. My daughter was friends with Sam but has lost touch.

We miss him dearly, love having and hearing his music. It was a gift he wanted to share with everyone.

  • Well , I am pleased to see this on here! I agree, by far the best and only, real version in my mind. It was things like this he lived for, and keep him with us today.

I am also pleased to say us boys are all doing well. My little brother is in Oregon, attending U of O, singing with an a cappella group, ' mind the gap', and playing every instrument he gets his mind on. My big brother is in Anchorage, works for a engineering group . He has started a family with his wife Kristen, and now have a

  • I want to say like 10 years ago when he was still teaching. Pancreatic cancer.

  • He died!? when!?

  • Sure was nice to hear sourdough mikes voice again...been awhile. R.I.P.

  • Happy 50th Birthday Alaska. My Grandmother lived in Alaska from 1945 to 1952 before moving back to New York State, she lived in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Palmer. I was able to play this song for my grandmother before she passed away in 2002 after downloading the song off the internet. Once again Happy 50th Birthday 1959 to 2009. Greeting from Pennsylvania USA
