To me, this song can be seen to serve as a metaphor---Mary is the individual who, though much suffering and patience, gives birth to Jesus--wisdom. Jesus or wisdom is born within us, but perhaps we too must be crucified--in other words, enter through all the trials and absurdities of life. This song also reminds me of Rumi's most oft-quoted passage about Mary and Jesus:
“As long as Mary did not feel the pain of childbirth, she did not go
toward the tree of good fortune. And the pangs of childbirth drove
her to the trunk of the palm tree. (Qur’an XIX 23) That pain took
her to the tree, and the barren tree bore fruit. The body is like Mary,
and each of us has a Jesus within him. If the pain appears, our Jesus
will be born. But if no pain comes, Jesus will return to his Origin
on that same hidden road by which he came. We will be deprived of
him and reap no benefit.”
Lyrics:
Jesukin
Lives my quiet cell within
Thou in me dwelling
All is lie but Jesukin
Jesu of the skies
My little one, Thou my delight
I with Thee, Thou with me
Next my heart through every night
'S airiú (a keen or exclamation of lament--no literal translation)
Who hangs from yonder passion tree?
Your son, dear Mother
Do you not know me?
Judas, James and John
Have you seen my only son?
Ochon! My eyes are blind
Ochon! My heart is wrung
Stella Maris, Semper Clara
Rosa Munde, Res Miranda
Misterium Mirabile
(English: Star of the Sea, ever bright
Spotless Rose, most admirable
Wondrous mystery)
'S airiú agus ochon!
Sad I am till you return
To have you at the break of dawn!
Ochon airiú
Without you!
I'll give you a dollar to do that again! Just kidding, it's my way of saying that's pretty. I understand the english and latin and some german and spanish but Celt as I am Gaelic is just beyond me. You do it sooo well.
